MODEL UN CONFERENCE ON OCTOBER 19!
The Model UN Workshop, held on October 19, was a landmark event filled with critical discussions led by some of the most impressive activists and student leaders. The conference, attended by more than 80 students from eight universities, colleges and schools from Almaty, including KazNARU, Turan University, Al Farabi KazNU and some others, provided a platform to explore and debate essential global issues. In addition, Model UN team hosted students from Kyrgyzstan and international students who study in Kazakhstan. Here's a look back at the topics discussed and the key takeaways from the event.
UN Women (in English): Bridging the Gender Gap in Education and Professions
This committee focused on the persistent gender gaps in education and professional fields. Participants explored various strategies to achieve gender equality and empower women worldwide. Discussions revolved around policy reforms, access to quality education, and creating inclusive work environments. Innovative ideas were shared on how to dismantle the barriers preventing women from reaching their full potential. The emphasis was on collaboration between governments, educational institutions, and the private sector to ensure equal opportunities for all.
UNGA (in English): Summit of the Future
At this committee, delegates delved into the critical issue of nuclear deterrence and the arms race, discussing ways to avoid escalation between countries and promote global peace and security. The conversation highlighted the importance of international treaties and diplomatic efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Delegates also discussed the role of global organizations in mediating conflicts and fostering a culture of peace. Innovative proposals for disarmament and arms control were presented, aiming to reduce the threat of nuclear warfare.
UN FAO (in Kazakh): Agricultural Technologies and Innovations
The focus here was on the crucial role of agricultural technologies and innovations in fighting hunger and poverty. Participants examined how modern agricultural practices can enhance food security and contribute to sustainable development. The discussion included the potential of precision farming, biotechnology, and sustainable agricultural practices. Delegates emphasized the importance of investing in agricultural research and development to create resilient food systems capable of withstanding climate change and other challenges.
UNDP (Russian): Social Protection and Support for Vulnerable Groups
This committee focused on innovative ways to overcome poverty and ensure social equity for all. Discussions centered around effective social protection programs and policies that support vulnerable groups. Delegates shared successful case studies and best practices from different countries, emphasizing the importance of inclusive social policies. The conversation also touched on the role of technology in enhancing social protection systems and providing better access to resources for those in need.
A Dynamic and Thought-Provoking Experience
The Model UN Workshop on October 19 provided a dynamic and thought-provoking experience that broadened horizons and sharpened diplomatic skills.

It’s an excellent platform for students to engage with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and develop the skills needed to address the challenges of our time," said Dr. Rafis Abazov, coordinator for Model UN New Silk Way at KazNARU.
