The department of «General and specialized animal science» was organized in 1930. It was headed by associate professor P.M. Krupennikov. Since 1932, its head was professor V.O. Svirenko.
This department became the basis for many departments of the zootechnical cycle, since the department of feeding farm animals (1934), the department of small-scale livestock farming (1950) with courses in sheep breeding, pig breeding and poultry farming; the department of horse breeding and camel breeding (1952) and the department of cattle breeding (1934) were later separated from it.
The Department «of Farm animal breeding» was organized in 1933, among the first independent departments of the zootechnical profile. Its first head was Professor K. M. Lyutikov.
In 1934-1937, the department was headed by professor V.V. Nagorny.
For more than 30 years at the department, first as an assistant, then as an associate professor and from 1937 as a professor. Until 1963, the head of the department was the honored zootechnician of the Kazakh SSR, candidate of agricultural sciences T.B. Bokenbaev.
He was a very talented scientist who made a great contribution to the development of zootechnical science in the Republic. His contribution to the organization of the educational process and the definition of the main direction of research work on the creation of a new degeres fat-tailed sheep breed in Kazakhstan is invaluable.
For a long time (1947-1976) the department also employed a graduate of the Alma-Ata zooveterinary institute, a prominent scientist of our country, doctor of agricultural sciences, professor M.A. Aletov, who became its head in May 1963. He made a great contribution to equipping educational laboratories, staffing the department with scientific and pedagogical personnel and to the successful continuation of the research work that had begun. On his initiative, in 1967, full-time postgraduate study was opened for the first time at the department in the specialty 06.02.01 - breeding, selection, genetics and reproduction of farm animals.
