International Conference “Model UN – KazNARU” Held on December 6, 2025
On December 6, 2025, the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University (KazNARU) hosted the International Conference “Model United Nations – KazNARU”. The event was timed to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, the designation of Almaty as a UN Regional Hub for Sustainable Development, and the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s neutrality.
The conference brought together over 200 participants, including students, volunteers, faculty members, representatives of the diplomatic corps, UN agencies, and international students from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Georgia, Nigeria, and Poland. Among the distinguished guests were representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, the Consulates General of Turkmenistan, Poland, and Nigeria, the UN Department of Global Communications, the UN Volunteers Program, as well as domestic and international universities.
The main theme of the conference was “Path to Peace and Cooperation in Global Affairs.” Participants discussed challenges on the international agenda, ranging from artificial intelligence regulation and the role of private military companies to cultural heritage protection and global youth mental health issues. Sessions were conducted in the format of actual UN committees, including the Security Council, General Assembly, UNESCO, WHO, Human Rights Council, and others.
The Model UN at KazNARU serves as a next-generation educational platform where students take on the roles of diplomats, advocate for the interests of countries, draft resolutions, and find compromises. Kristina Sveridyuk, Secretary-General of the Model UN conference, noted that participation in such events develops key skills for future careers, including public speaking, strategic thinking, and teamwork.
Participants paid special attention to the role of youth in sustainable development. In his address, Vlastimil Samek, representative of the UN Department of Global Communications, emphasized:
“The UN has always supported youth movements and volunteer initiatives. You — the younger generation — are shaping the future of international relations and global cooperation. Your voice matters, and we are proud of your participation in events like Model UN KazNARU.”
The conference included not only debates but also training seminars on negotiations, UN procedures, and drafting resolutions. Participants received guidance from faculty of international law and international relations, as well as invited experts and UN representatives.
In conclusion, Rafis Abazov, KazNARU’s Director of International Cooperation, thanked all participants and invited students to join the Model UN Club – KazNARU, a platform of ideas, diplomacy, and leadership where the next generation of professionals is prepared for international dialogue and constructive engagement.
