PRACTICAL WORKSHOP HELD AT THE KAZAKH NATIONAL AGRARIAN UNIVERSITY AS PART OF AN INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC PROJECT
On November 23, 2023, a practical seminar on "Open Remote Sensing and Applications in Agriculture" concluded as part of the international scientific project under the special PEER 9 program by the National Academy of Sciences of the USA (NAS) and USAID on the theme: "Impact of excessive water use and agricultural intensification on the drying of the Aral Sea: SES dynamics in the Syr Darya River Basin."
The seminar took place from November 21 to 23 at the Agrotechnological Hub of the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University.
Among the distinguished speakers and seminar instructors were project members from the University of South Dakota: Dr. Ranjeet John and graduate student Venkatesh Kolluru.
The event saw active participation from representatives of the Kazakhstan-British Technical University, the Institute of Ionosphere, the Kazakhstan-German University, and the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University.
Participants gained practical insights into Google Earth Engine applications, covering topics such as supervised classification, mapping of agricultural crop types, assessment of agricultural intensification near protected areas, and detection of land cover changes in pasturelands.
The seminar concluded with a presentation by Dr. Zhanay Sagin, who proposed further collaboration and discussed potential joint projects between KazNARU, KBTU, and the University of South Dakota, with special emphasis on snow cover preservation in Western Kazakhstan for irrigation purposes.
Certificates of participation were awarded to all participants, and speakers received commemorative gifts at the end of the seminar.
