Relevance
Lentils (Lens culinaris) are an important legume crop, rich in protein, environmentally friendly, and improve soil fertility. However, productivity and sustainable lentil production in Kazakhstan are limited by biotic stress factors, including diseases and pests. These threats are intensifying under climate change. Therefore, genetic improvement of biotic-resistant varieties is essential for strengthening local lentil production, reducing dependence on imports, and ensuring food security.
Purpose
Developing CRISPR/Cas genome editing technology to generate lentil lines resistant to fungal pathogens using plant pathogen interactions and knockout of genes involved in these interactions.
Expected and achieved results
Lentil genotypes resistant to biotic stress factors were identified;
The level of genetic diversity was assessed and promising models for breeding were selected;
Scientifically based recommendations for increasing lentil productivity and resilience were developed.
A lentil collection was assembled, and an initial genetic evaluation was conducted;
Initial data on the response to biotic stress factors was obtained;
The results will form the basis for further breeding work in the next stages of the project.
Information for potential users
The project's results are intended for use by agricultural producers, farms, breeding and seed organizations involved in lentil (Lens culinaris) cultivation, as well as agricultural research institutes and universities.
The genotypes obtained during the study, resistant to biotic stress factors, can be used as source material in breeding programs. The project's scientific results will increase lentil yields, reduce losses from diseases and pests, and improve the economic efficiency of local production.
Furthermore, the project's materials can be used in educational processes, in the preparation of scientific publications, and in the development of practical recommendations aimed at the sustainable development of the agricultural sector.
