The Forum “My Child is My Most Important Project” Held in Almaty

The forum “Balam – eñ basty jobam” (“My Child is My Most Important Project”), dedicated to children’s healthy nutrition and the formation of useful habits, was held in Almaty. The event took place on November 15 at the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University and brought together more than one hundred participants — parents, educators, doctors, nutritionists, and experts in the field of nutrition.

The forum was opened by the Vice-Rector for International Relations of the Kazakh National Agrarian Research University, Rafis Abazov. He emphasized that the culture of healthy eating should begin within the family and continue in the educational environment:
“University is a place where a healthy, active young generation is formed. We strive to educate not only professionals but also socially responsible citizens. It is important that every individual understands the value of a balanced diet and can monitor their habits, including through simple digital tools,” he noted.

Rauan Yerulan, Project Manager for Healthy Nutrition at FAO Kazakhstan, highlighted the need for a systemic approach in school nutrition:
“Developing healthy eating habits from an early age is an investment in the future. When a child understands the connection between nutrition, well-being, and academic success, they begin to consciously choose healthier products,” she said.

Elvira Berdauletova, Communications Specialist at FAO Kazakhstan, emphasized the importance of family involvement:
“Our goal is not only to talk about the principles of healthy eating but also to inspire parents and students to take care of themselves. We want to show that a healthy lifestyle can be interesting, enjoyable, and accessible to everyone.”

A separate discussion at the forum was dedicated to the alarming rates of childhood obesity. Kazakhstan ranks among the leading countries in Central Asia in this indicator. Among the main causes, specialists name the high consumption of sugary drinks among adolescents over 12 years old, as well as a lack of essential vitamins and minerals in children’s diets. Despite progress in sustainable development of the agri-food system, public health and nutrition remain serious challenges.

To address these issues, FAO is implementing the pilot project “Contribution to the Development and Scaling Up of Healthy Nutrition” in Kazakhstan. The initiative includes technical work with government agencies, the introduction of updated school nutrition standards, the organization of research, and the launch of pilot programs in educational institutions.

The forum “Balam – eñ basty jobam” became a platform for exchanging experience and finding solutions aimed at improving the nutrition and lifestyle of Kazakhstani children and ensuring a more sustainable future for the younger generation.
