President Tokayev’s Address at the 80th UN General Assembly

A meeting was held at KazNARU with university students, where the youth got acquainted with the Speech of the Head of State. From the side of KazNARU were: Rafis Abazov – Vice-Rector for International Relations, Maiya Suyunchaliyeva – Leading Specialist of the Institute of Green and Sustainable Development.

President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev highlighted important directions:

1. Upholding the UN Charter and Global Cooperation

President Tokayev called for a renewed commitment to the UN Charter, emphasizing that the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and peaceful dispute resolution must be upheld without selective application. He stressed that meaningful reform is needed to restore trust and effectiveness in international institutions.

He noted that the world is facing an alarming erosion of arms control agreements and growing mistrust among nations. In response, he advocated for revitalizing global security structures and enhancing multilateral cooperation.

2. Reforming the UN Security Council

President Tokayev stressed that reforming the United Nations Security Council is a strategic necessity, not just a theoretical discussion. He argued for expanding representation to include major nations from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and giving a stronger voice to middle powers as “bridges of trust” amid geopolitical tensions.

3. Peace, Nuclear Disarmament, and Non-Proliferation

Tokayev highlighted the urgent need for dialogue among nuclear powers and stronger multilateral action to reduce the threat of nuclear weapons. Kazakhstan has offered to host new inclusive discussions on nuclear disarmament and to support progress toward international treaties like the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) framework.

4. Humanitarian Focus and Global Crises

President Tokayev reaffirmed Kazakhstan’s concern over ongoing conflicts, including the Ukrainian crisis and humanitarian suffering in Gaza, calling for diplomatic solutions and protection of civilians in line with international humanitarian law.

He also underscored the importance of tackling root causes of conflict through dialogue, restraint, and mutual respect to ensure lasting peace.

5. Investment in Peace and Human Capital

Tokayev urged nations to track their investments in peace and promote efforts that enhance human capital and cooperation. He emphasized that volunteerism and solidarity are essential and symbolic, especially in the 80th anniversary year of the UN, calling on everyone to invest in a fairer, greener world.

6. Digital Transformation and Development

In his address, President Tokayev also mentioned national priorities such as digitalization and artificial intelligence, highlighting Kazakhstan’s development goals to integrate advanced technologies across society while ensuring proper professional education and workforce adaptation.

The final words were said by Rafis Abazov, Vice-Rector for International Relations. He emphasized the importance of participating in such meetings among young people.

A group photo was also taken at the end.

The event was held with the support of the Institute of Green and Sustainable Development at KazNARU.
